Robert Groslot is een begaafd componist, dirigent en pianist, bekend met vele genres en stijlen. Als componist is hij gekend om zijn beheersing van de orkestrale textuur alsook zijn kenmerkende kleurrijke en ritmisch uitdagende stijl.

Zijn werkcatalogus omvat vele orkestwerken evenals solo en kamermuziekwerken. De belangrijkste werken zijn Rainfall on Pink City, Black Venus, The Great Globe (alle in opdracht), ‘Si le Monde…’ en een reeks van zestien concerto’s voor solo-instrument en orkest. Naast werken voor de traditionele concerto-instrumenten – piano, viool en cello, aarzelde Robert Groslot niet om ook concerto’s voor saxofoon, harp, piccolo, fluit, hobo, marimba, euphonium, gitaar, althobo, trompet, orgel en contrabas te schrijven. Het zijn stuk voor stuk zeer uitdagende en inspirerende stukken voor de solist, die in een toegankelijke maar persoonlijke stijl geschreven zijn.

Als gastdirigent werkte hij samen met het Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest, het London Symphony Orchestra, het Ulster National Orchestra, het Nationaal Orkest van België, het Koninklijk Filharmonisch Orkest van Vlaanderen, het Gelders Orkest, het Noord Nederland Orkest en vele andere. Hij is de oprichter en dirigent van het orkest II Novecento, waarmee hij concerten in heel Europa brengt, zoals de "Night of the Proms".

Hij werkte samen met topsolisten uit zowel het klassieke circuit als de pop-wereld en dirigeerde concerten voor meer dan 10.000.000 bezoekers in totaal. Enkele solisten waar hij mee samen werkte zijn o.m. Daniel Blumenthal, Wayne Marshall, Jose Van Dam, Ole Edvard Antonsen, France Springuel, Sandra Schwarzhaupt, Jan Michiels, Manuel Barrueco, Steven Mead en anderen, evenals bekende popartiesten zoals Joe Cocker, James Brown, Sting, Toto, Andrea Bocelli, Zucchero en vele vele anderen.

Robert Groslot is zijn carrière begonnen als pianist. Als winnaar van de Alessandro Casagrande Competition (Terni, 1974) en als laureaat van de Koningin Elisabethwedstrijd (Brussel, 1978), werd hij regelmatig uitgenodigd als solist en kamermusicus. Robert Groslot ondernam concertreizen in meer dan 20 landen in 4 continenten en speelde meer dan 60 verschillende pianoconcerto’s, waaronder ook een aantal creaties. Hij maakte vele studio-, radio-en televisie-opnames, evenals ongeveer 100 CD's.

Robert Groslot werkte als docent piano aan verschillende conservatoria in België en Nederland: eerst aan het Lemmensinstituut, waar hij ook de oprichter en de dirigent van het ensemble voor hedendaagse muziek was, vervolgens aan het Utrechts Conservatorium en bijna zijn hele carrière ook aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium van Antwerpen. Hier werd hij tevens benoemd tot artistiek directeur van 1995 tot 2002, waarbij hij bijzonder veel belang hechtte aan de orkestklas en aan orkestervaring voor alle studenten, tevens geïnspireerd door de successen van de twee nationale jeugdorkesten die hij oprichtte en leidde in de jaren '90.

Robert Groslot - Composer

Robert Groslot (°1951) is an accomplished composer, conductor and pianist acquainted with many genres and styles. As a composer he is best known for his mastery of orchestral texture as well as his distinctive colored and rhytmical challenging writing.

His work catalogue includes many major orchestral pieces as well as solo and chamber music works. Important works are Rainfall on Pink City, Black Venus, The Great Globe (all three commissions), Si le Monde... and a series of sixteen concertos for solo instruments and orchestra. In addition to works for the traditional concerto instruments - piano, violin and cello, Robert Groslot didn’t hesitate to write concertos for saxophone, harp, piccolo, flute, oboe, marimba, euphonium, guitar, english horn, trumpet, organ and double bass. These concertos are one by one very challenging and inspirational pieces for the performer, and are written in a personal and accessible style.

As a guest-conductor he worked with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Ulster National Orchestra, the National Orchestra of Belgium, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Flanders, the Arnhem Philharmonic Orchestra, the North Netherlands Symphony Orchestra and many others. He is the founder and conductor of the orchestra II Novecento which he conducts in concerts throughout Europe, such as the “Night of the Proms”.

He collaborated with top soloists both from the classical scene and the pop scene and has performed for more than 10.000.000 visitors in total. Robert Groslot has begun his career as a pianist. After winning the Alessandro Casagrande Competition (Terni, 1974) and becoming laureate at the Queen Elisabeth Competition (Brussels, 1978), he was regulary invited as a soloist and chamber musician. Robert Groslot undertook concert trips in more than 20 countries in 4 continents and played over 60 different piano concertos, some of them creations. He also made many studio, radio and television recordings, as well as about 100 CD’s.

He worked as Professor of piano at several institutions in Belgium and the Netherlands: first at the Lemmens Institute, where he also founded and led the ensemble for contemporary music, later at the Utrecht Conservatory and almost his entire career also at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp. There he was also appointed Artistic Director between 1995 and 2002, and during this period has put heavy emphasis on orchestral playing for all students, inspired by the successes of two national youth orchestras he grounded and led in the ‘90s.
