Maarten De Splenter - Componist
Maarten De Splenter (1984) studeerde saxofoon bij Frank Commeene aan de Stedelijke Academie voor Muziek en Woord Ieper en hij behaalde diverse prijzen op solistenwedstrijden; zo o.m. won hij in 2002 op altsaxofoon de prestigieuze Axion Classics Prijs.
Als tiener schreef hij al composities en arrangementen voor het harmonieorkest Ypriana uit Ieper waarin hij tot in 2007 saxofoon speelde. In 2007 behaalde hij het masterdiploma saxofoon-klassiek aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium van Gent en een jaar later werd hem in Ieper de Victor Legley Prijs toegekend. Aan het conservatorium van Tilburg (Nederland) behaalde Maarten een masterdiploma ‘compositie jazz en lichte muziek’. Aan datzelfde conservatorium oogstte hij veel succes met zijn onderzoek naar compositorische systemen in de musical Wicked, waarvoor hij Oscar en Grammy - winnaar Stephen Schwarz in New York mocht ontmoeten.
Maarten spitst zich toe op het componeren van muziektheater en musicals waarvoor hij hoofdzakelijk samenwerkt met de Tony Award - genomineerde schrijver-regisseur Koen van Dijk. Daarnaast schrijft Maarten ook voor bezettingen en genres variërend van orkest- en kamermuziek tot poprock en zelfs wereld- en elektronische muziek.
De Splenter is ook actief als zanger, pianist en saxofonist in diverse bands en trad met zijn eigen folkrock band Anveld en poprock band Areen met succes in binnen- en buitenland op.
Maarten doceert saxofoon, compositie en muziektheorie binnen zowel de klassieke als de jazz en lichte muziek. Daarnaast doet hij ook nog onderzoek naar thematische structuren, vooral binnen het lichte muziekrepertoire.

Maarten De Splenter (1984) studied the saxophone with Frank Commeene at the municipal music academy of Ypres. He won several contests for soloists, including the prestigious Axion Classics Prize in 2002. He was a member of the municipal wind band Ypriana until 2007 and at a young age he wrote arrangements and compositions for this band. In 2007 he obtained a Master’s Degree for classical saxophone at the Ghent Royal Conservatory of Music and one year later he was awarded the Victor Legley Prize at Ypres. He then got a Master’s Degree for 'composition of entertainment and jazz music' at the Conservatory of Tilburg (The Netherlands). During these composition studies, he wrote an extended essay about the compositional system in the musical Wicked and got the opportunity to meet Oscar and Grammy Award winner Stephen Schwartz in New York.
Maarten focuses on the composition of music for theatre and musicals and works together with Tony Award nominee writer-director Koen van Dijk. Maarten also composes for varied genres such as chamber music, symphonic music, pop rock and electronic music.
De Splenter is also active as a singer, a pianist and a saxophonist in several bands and more specifically in the past in his own folk rock group Anveld and pop rock group Areen which boasted international success.
Maarten teaches the saxophone, composition and music theory as well in the classical music as in the jazz music sphere and he studies the thematic structures in music. (tr. Francis Pieters - add. Maarten De Splenter)
